Richard Holmes & Gene Ammons Groovin' With Jug on Import Gram Vinyl. Ironically, Gene "Jug" Ammons tended to be critical of organists; he was quoted as saying that "organ players don't know any changes." However, as critical as the Chicago tenor saxman might have been of organists, he did some of his best work in their presence.

Tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons recorded many albums during , a busy period that was brought to an abrupt halt by his arrest for narcotics abuse. Jug finds the great tenor in excellent form, interpreting six standards and two of his originals with the assistance of pianist Richard Wyands, bassist Doug Watkins, drummer J.C. Heard, and the congas of Ray Barretto; Sleepy Anderson replaces.

The tracks & playing are sublime but here's the problem: this version is in simulated stereo, which has a faraway/hollow sound quality. Album was originally released as 'Soulful Saxophone' in mono and the sound quality of the mono version is vastly superior.3/5(2).

Gene Ammons was and remains a truly "Grand Slam" tenor balladeer among the elite saxophonists, both past and present. This CD, "Gentle Jug, Volume 3"", and his previous two ballads albums, "Gene Ammons, The Gene Ammons Story: Gentle Jug" and "Gene Ammons, Gentle Jug Volume 2" are unquestionably three of the finest jazz ballad albums recorded.5/5(7).
